About Krishi Vigyan Kendra Siaha

Krishi Vigyan Kendra Siaha (KVK Siaha) is one of the agricultural extensioncenter in India. The name means “farm science center”. Krishi Vigyan Kendra  serve as the ultimate link between the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and farmers, and aim to apply agricultural research in a practical, localized setting. All KVKs fall under the jurisdiction of one of the 11 Agricultural Technology Application Research Institutes (ATARIs) throughout India.

One of the 8 KVKs in Mizoram Krishi Kendra Siaha was established in year 2008 formed under the host department- Department of Agriculture(Research & Extension), Government of Mizoram. A KVK can be formed under a variety of host institutions, including agricultural universities, state departments, ICAR institutes, other educational institutions, or NGOs.

Location

Krishi Vigyan Kendra Siaha is located on a hill at  Siahatlah-III,  Siaha district wihch is located at the Southern part of the State Mizoram

Activities carried out by KVK Siaha

KVK Siaha district performs its activities as per mandates suggested by ICAR,New Delhi. They are as follows:

  1.  On farm trials to identify location specific of agricultural technologies under various system: On Farm trials on crops ,animals etc have been conducted in small area at farmers field in few villages like Noahtlah I,III, Lobo, Kawlchaw E, Zero ,Zyhno, Siatlai etc for different crops  like ginger, brinjal, chilli, onion,strawberry, cabbage, mustard, pineapple etc and animals and birds like kamrupa birds, pig, poultry, goats, quail, cattle etc. and post harvest technology, food preservation, child development and women empowerment, etc.
  2. Front line demonstration (FLD): FLD’s are conducted to establish different agricultural technologies on farmers field. Demonstrations are done for horizontal Spread of different agricultural technologies under different crops like soybean, strawberry, French bean, Okra, Tomato, Mizo Chilli, cabbage, broccoli, paddy etc. Amongst the  poultry and livestock sectors, popularization of Quail, kamrupa birds, rabbitry, feed conservation, and other scientific managemental practices have been achieved.
  3. Trainings: Trainings are given to farmers , rural youth and extension personnel to update their knowledge and skills in modern agricultural technologies.
  4. Demonstrations: Different methods and techniques for agricultural development are also demonstrated in KVK Demonstrational farm.
  5. Diagnostic visits : Diagnostic visits at farmers’ field  to identify problems (Pests and disease incidence, or any other crops related problems)
  6. Field day: Selected farmers on timely basis are taken to different farms to provide innovative ideas and technologies.
  7. Clinical assistance: In regard to animals clinical assistance and treatment are provided at farmers’ doorstep.
  8. Exhibition / Kisan Mela / Kisan gosthis’: Exhibition / Kisan Mela / Kisan gosthis’ etc are organised at least twice in a year to create awareness on different agricultural tools, implements and technologies
  9. Interaction: Interactive session between KVK scientists and those engaged in different agricultural sectors are conducted on need based subjects
  10. TV & Radio talk: TV and Radio talk with Live Phone In Programme is conducted once in a year to assist farmers of remote areas in their day to day problems
  11. Soil Testing: An important component in increasing production is location wise soil testing and issueing of soil health card is also being conducted in various parts of the district
  12. Mobile advisory services: Scientists of different discipline rendered mobile advisory services through SMS/ Whats app messages during disease outbreak (crops and animals) through selected Farmers’ Friend in different villages. This is a very important tool in minimizing production losses and ensuring endemics of the problems.

Other than the above ICAR mandated activities, different activities like  Celebrations of important days, Doubling farmers income, Swachhta hi Sewa, Jal Shakti Abhiyan, distribution of leaflets/folders, NFSM, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Skill Development for farmers, PKVY, STRY (Skill training for rural youth) etc has also been taken up by KVK Siaha. Capacity development of farmers and extension personnel to update their knowledge and skills on modern agricultural technologies –

  • To work as Knowledge and Resource Centre of agricultural technologies for supporting initiatives of public, private and voluntary sectors in improving the agricultural economy of the district.
  • Provide farm advisories using ICT and other media means on varied subjects of interest to farmers.

In addition, KVK would produce quality technological products (seed, planting material, bio-agents, livestock) and make it available to farmers, organize frontline extension activities, identify and document selected farm innovations and converge with ongoing schemes and programmes within the mandate of KVK.
